Language is the symbol, while culture is the treasure of humans. Language is not only a tool of communication but carries the profound essence of culture. In this case, idioms and proverbs are the results of life wisdom. They are considered to be an interesting, practical, pure, and refined culture.Since Hakka language is vital to the cultural inheritance of Hakka, this study adopts Hakka idioms and proverbs to teach the Native Language class in elementary school so that this study may discover students understanding of them and the tactics of learning Hakka idioms and proverbs. This study is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, while the second chapter is concerning the literature review. The aim is to discover the insufficiency of practical teaching based on the present study results so as to serve as the foundation of this study. The third chapter is regarding the present situations of how Hakka idioms and proverbs are taught in elementary school by means of literature analysis, questionnaires, and interviews. The fourth chapter focuses on how Hakka idioms and proverbs are presented in teaching by analyzing various versions of textbooks along with their course syllabuses and how the teaching materials of Hakka idioms and proverbs are applied to the central mottos and the seven learning areas. The fifth chapter is concerning the present situations and tactics of Hakka idioms and proverbs instruction, while the sixth chapter is the conclusion. This study adopts two versions of textbooks published by Han Lin and Kang Hsuan respectively to be the study object. These two versions are widely taught in elementary schools. Moreover, they have the most Hakka idioms and proverbs of life wisdom. Besides, both of them design their course syllabuses based on the central mottos of school and the seven learning areas so that students may apply Hakka idioms and proverbs in their development of habits. Since idioms and proverbs used or learned at school are mostly related to morality and good virtues, teachers of Hakka language focus on mainly having good family relationships in class. Therefore, they may adopt excellent teaching tactics of Hakka idioms and proverbs (e.g. recitation, cartoons, pictures, stories, games and plays) to teach their students so that they may compare what they have learned at school with their real life experience. Moreover, teachers may apply multimedia teaching materials in class, blend Hakka idioms and proverbs into songs, and select some students to be the assistants to help their peers.Hakka idioms and proverbs are not only the treasure of culture but the heritage of language. If they are well united with the teaching materials of languages or the instruction of other learning areas, students can learn them in a more diverse way so that Hakka idioms and proverbs can be passed down from one generation to another....
