In consideration of global warming, countries all over the world have begun to engage in environmental preservation initiatives. In the past, humans have resorted to using natural resources to ensure survival, such as wearing animal fur for warmth and weaving simple linen textiles to cover their bodies and shield themselves from the sun. From simple coverings to objects of vanity, the evolving use of textiles are similar to changing fashions, in which materials are cut or sculpted into creative designs that demonstrate unique fashions and overall styling. Today, growing environmental concerns have resulted in a profusion of paper art creative projects that illustrate creative processes with origami or other paper materials. In light of this, this study aims to utilize readily available recycled paper materials such as posters, newspapers, magazines and flyers, because these materials are pliable, non-reflective, finished, smooth and glossy, all characteristics of which may help to bring out unique traits of Taiwanese cultural creativity in terms of paper art costume design and styling. Techniques in paper cutting have been applied, and cutting, sculpting, folding and shaping methods have been utilized to create three-dimensional and semi-three-dimensional overall figure designs and characters. There are four purposes to this research. First, by using paper art processing techniques of cutting, folding, sculpting and shaping, round, triangular, oval and other geometrical shapes are created from point, line to plane. These shapes are layered and arranged to form three-dimensional representations out of two-dimensional designs. Actual designs include Na Cha the Great Marshal and the Eight Generals, the 14 tribes of Taiwanese aborigines, the Hakka blue cloth, fashion catwalks, the Three Princes, and other national costumes such as the Japanese kimono. Secondly, traditional paper art techniques are used in conjunction with contemporary design trends as elements of inspiration. Thirdly, due to the rapid growth of technology, people are experiencing drastic changes in their lifestyle and cultures, in the midst of which animation technology has also become a major creative trend. Therefore it has been the aim of this project to mold the thematic characters into three-dimensional figurines, followed by the application of 3D animation software to present these figurines on a virtual catwalk, to represent virtually practical creative designs, in order to embody the beauty of paper art costumes. Fourthly, it is hoped that this study may lead to developments in figurine costume design, fashion design that is representative of Taiwanese cultural creativity, home furnishings with environmental and artistic creative value, as well as tutorials on figurine paper art. It is also hoped that the study may inspire home economics professionals’ progressive design logic and thought, and serve as preprocess for creations in fashion design and styling. In this study, recycled paper materials were made into three-dimensional paper board designs and styled on small-scale figurines as an experimental and creative process in paper art costume design. Literature review was conducted to analyze the creative elements present, material usage was analyzed, integrated and applied on costume overall styling, all in order to bring forth new artistic dimensions in paper art creative design. Suggestions for improvisation derived from the create processes, results and relevant studies are provided for the reference of future research, in hopes of promoting the better and more progressive application and development of recycled paper usage....
