【外文摘要】　 Cantonese, Min and Hakka are the three major dialects in Zhanjiang, which is situated in the west part of Guangdong Province. Papers on the dialectal Cantonese spoken in the urban area are rare in literatures owing to the prevalent view that the vernacular language is only a variety of the standard Cantonese. Consequently literatures on the local dialects are found to be mostly concerned with those used by the rural people around the city. Based on this finding, the present paper, however, is to focus on the dialectal Cantonese spoken by the inhabitants in the urban area of the city. By categorizing the speakers into three groups, i.e., the senior, the middle-aged and the young, the author achieves his research aims in three aspects: firstly, identifying the phonetic systems employed by the respective group of these speakers; secondly, making a detailed comparison of the synchronic phonetic differences of the three age groups; and lastly, revealing the evolvement of the dialectal Cantonese in the urban Zhanjiang since the 1980s. Based on the finding on the various factors, which facilitate the changes of dialectal Zhanjiang-Cantonese, the present paper also makes a bold prediction of the evolving tendency of the vernacular language....
